Quotes of the Week

"The Tories' main challenger in the June 26 Henley by-election will be the Liberal Democrats. Labour is expected to do so badly it will lose its deposit."

Evening Standard

www.thisislondon.co.uk - 5 June

"We're going to be running a strong campaign to win here in Henley, and I'm going to be back as often as I can and urge members from across the country to join me."

Lord Rennard

www.henleylibdems.org.uk - 26 May

Welcome to the Somerset County Liberal Democrats' website and we hope you will find plenty here to interest you. There are news headlines, county success stories - some in 'Bitesize', if you want a quick overview - and recently published press articles. Do find out more about the councillor for your area by going to 'contact the councillors' and if you scroll down, you may find they also have their own individual web page. This tells you more about them and in particular, how they've been spending their Community Budget.

It's official - Somerset recycles more than it landfills. Thank you to all our residents!

Wed 28th May 2008

The 2007/8 figures show that Somerset's residents have taken on board the reduce, re-use, and recycle message from Somerset's Waste Action Partnership. We are now recycling a staggering 51% of our household waste! This saves around a tonne of waste going into landfill every four minutes (and saves a landfill tax of £32 per tonne) and puts the county in the top league, not only nationally, but across the world.

SCANDALOUS SCARE-MONGERING BY TORIES

Thu 22nd May 2008

The Conservative group leader at County Hall, Ken Maddock, is wasting council officers valuable time by scare-mongering tactics, designed to get his group re-elected at next year's County Council elections.

PEOPLE POWER SAVES STREET'S WEST END POST OFFICE!

Wed 21st May 2008

A leak from inside government has confirmed increasingly strong rumours that Street's West End post-office will be one of the first in the country to be saved from closure. Although the official announcement is not due till 29th May, local residents are celebrating a victory for what Liberal Democrat county councillor Jim Mochnacz - who spearheaded the campaign - called "People Power - a united front of post-mistress, public and politicians".

We only pay Once for our PCSOs

Written by Cathy Bakewell and published in the Somerset County Gazette on Thu 15th May 2008

I would like to put the record straight regarding Roger Conway's letter: "Haven't we already paid for PCSOs?"

Don't begrudge us our success!

Written by Cllr. Ian Galloway on Mon 28th Apr 2008

I found your front page report on Ian Liddell-Grainger's views where he implies by implication that the county council is being profligate with ratepayers' money, very much part of a pattern; perhaps even what passes for a strategy of his. He appears to be trying to undermine ratepayers' confidence in the county council's ability to manage the funds with which they are entrusted.

Let's not forget the youngsters!
