Welcome to the Somerset County Liberal Democrats' website. We held or won 21 seats in the recent local elections and would like to say a BIG THANK YOU to all our helpers and supporters. We were obviously very sad to lose some very talented and committed councillors who were also good friends but we welcome some new faces who will work alongside us to provide an effective opposition group. These are; Maggy Daniell (Frome Selwood), Kim Turner (Ilminster), Danny Wedderkopp (Taunton Fairwater), John Bailey (Martock), Tony Lock (Yeovil East), Jenny Kenton (Chard North) and an old friend returning to the group, Tim Carroll (Yeovil West).

Nick Clegg launches 100-day action plan to save Britain's democracy. Nick proposed that Parliament should not break for the summer recess until the following steps are agreed and passed into law:

• Commitment to accept Kelly expenses reform in full.

• Recall power for MPs suspended for misconduct.

• House of Lords reform.

• Party funding reform.

• Fixed term parliaments.

• Changes to House of Commons procedure to reduce executive power.

"Together", he said, "over the next 100 days, we could achieve nothing less than the total reinvention of British politics, underpinned by the fundamental principles of accountability, transparency and probity. "These months would become a great moment in British political history, rather than a shabby footnote to a shameful month of revelations."
