Liberal Democrats on Somerset County Council

Welcome News for North Petherton Schools

11.00.00am GMT Mon 1st Dec 2008

At a special meeting of the county council's Executive Board, the Liberal Democrats approved the creation of a single primary school for North Petherton, which will combine the existing Community Infant and Junior Schools.

The new school will have many benefits for pupils and parents. It will also end the need for separate admissions and transfer arrangements between the schools at the end of Key Stage One. Changing key stages is always a difficult time for children and this was seen as a very positive step towards making that transition easier.

Parents, staff and pupils all welcomed the decision, which followed a wide period of consultation and discussion within the community.

Councillor Gloria Cawood, Somerset County Council's Portfolio Holder for Education, said:

"We have a long-standing policy of promoting the amalgamation of infants and junior schools and I am pleased that this new primary school will build on the strengths of the existing schools, and better help children reach their full potential."
