Liberal Democrats on Somerset County Council

IT'S OFFICIAL! SOMERSET IS THE BEST COUNTY FOR ADULT SOCIAL CARE IN THE COUNTRY

11.42.02am GMT Thu 27th Nov 2008

For the fourth year running, Liberal-Democrat controlled Somerset County Council has been given the highest possible 3 star 'excellent' rating for its Adult Social Care Services. The council usually vies for the top position, sometimes sharing it with others or just being pipped at the post. But this year, it's at the very top of the league!

The Commission for Social Care Inspection (CSCI) particularly highlighted a number of things including effective, clear leadership, an extensive volunteer network which is well supported and trained and the provision of a far higher number of breaks for carers of elderly people or those with mental health needs, than other councils.

Two of the Liberal Democrats' 2005-9 manifesto pledges, to provide dignified care for the elderly in their own homes and to support people with disabilities so that they can live independently, were also covered by the report. It praised the complex care packages that have reduced residential placements and increased home care, helping 8.000 elderly people to continue living independently in their own homes. It also recognised initiatives such as the Work Preparation Service, which provides work experience, training and support to 400 adults with learning disabilities to improve their chances of further employment.

Councillor Justin Robinson, Portfolio Holder for Health & Well-Being commented:

"We could not have achieved these results without the professionalism of our managers and the dedication of our frontline staff or without the close partnerships we have developed with other agencies. We thank them all for their commitment to giving every Somerset resident the best quality of life."
